What is the Library used for today?

I enjoyed researching this part most of all as my only previous thoughts on the Vatican Library came straight from a Dan Brown book and imagined it to be a secret closed of place, but instead i have found quiet the opposite.

There is not only extensive information available to people wishing to know more about the library and its collections, but also opportunities for people to tour the Vatican city and in special cases use the library for research purposes.

Library is open to:

  • researchers and scholars with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant scientific publications;
  • teachers and researchers at Universities and other institutes of Higher Education;
  • graduate students (laureati) who are pursuing research for a doctoral dissertation;
  • in exceptional cases, undergraduate students who can demonstrate that they need to consult material which is available only at the Vatican Library.
  • it is not open to High School students, nor, as a rule, to undergraduate University students.

The Library is mainly used for conservation purposes with the library currently undertaking a huge task of creating a digital archive of its collection.

The library also loans many parts of its collections for academic purposes and museum displays.

There is also a school of library service that is offered as a further development course for graduate students as well as a publishing house that looks after the Vatican’s publications.

Within the Vatican City there are tours offered, the opportunity to be married in St. Peters Basilica as well as Choirs from around the world are able to apply to come at sing within the city's walls.
